Small Biz Shout Out #3 -Elly VValler Design

Elly vvaller Mother & Baby Cards.jpg
I am so excited to introduce you all to Elly Vvaller. Elly is not only a beautiful person, she is also the creator of some insanely gorgeous hand printed paper goods! Yes that says hand printed!!!
I had a good chat with Elly and asked her to share her story, so that you could all be encouraged to reach out and support her.

Elly – Elly VValler Design

I’ve been running my own business since 2015.  I started whilst on maternity leave, got my first big retailer early on and the rest followed!
Originally from the UK, I’m now based in Sweden where I run the business from my peaceful home studio.
Elly_Studio_L
I have always been creative and am an illustrator at heart. For that reason, when I started my business I decided to specialise in beautiful hand foiled greetings cards and prints. I sell these worldwide via wholesale and through Etsy for those of you who love putting pen to paper or wrapping gifts in delightful designs.
The current climate means that I’m having to be a little more creative in how I work and what I’m producing. I’ve found my new print at home files  are doing well and I’m hoping to offer a bespoke service where I ship products direct with a personal message.  Fingers crossed!

As a small business owner, I’m continuously looking at working harder on my social presence.  I feel that it’s so important my customers know who’s behind the brand and understand that there’s more to me than my stationery.  I am currently working on a brand new website that combines my love for vintage, styling and illustration, so watch this space!
Collaborations are at the top of my list!  Do get in touch if you have a great idea!

At times like this we all need to remember we’re in this together!  It’s unthinkable that every single person and business is affected by Covid 19 no matter how big or small they are.  I truly hope we can learn to see the positive take aways from this situation we find ourselves in. I’m hoping that over time we relearn the joy of snail mail, slowing down and most importantly, staying in touch.  Writing is our historical archive and we don’t want to lose it in a time when text and zoom is king.
I am lucky in that I haven’t had to make too many changes to my way of working because of the pandemic. However, I have made it my goal to create more of a presence on social media to really reach my customers and show them who I am and what I am creating. I’d love for you to reach out and find me, see my work, like what I do, and purchase something that may brighten someone’s day just at the right time.
Elly xx
If you would like to get in touch with Elly regarding wholesale or purchasing something to make someone smile, please email her directly at @ellyvvallerdesign@gmail.com     or you can reach out to her through Instagram

Small Biz Shout Out #2 Love Gwen Jewellery

The first time I spoke to Corinne, and heard her story, I just wanted to reach out and hug her. However, due to social distancing and all that, I am only able to show her my love by sharing with you, her story. This is not only a tale of bravery against the odds, determination and love, it is a story that will make you realise exactly why shopping small is so damn important. Keeping talented people like Corinne supported should be the first thing we think when we are looking to buy.  Here is Corinne’s story!

IMG_2802

Corinne – Love Gwen Jewellery

I have always been an artist, I did sculpture, painting and in my 20’s I started as a young apprentice under my now mentor Lisa. I worked with Lisa for 13 years, after begging her to hire me! I learned from a strong woman doing it on her own and have now followed in her footsteps.

After having my two children Beau (7)and Gwen (4) I was inspired to create jewellery that made me and my customers capture the love that our children, siblings and partners had brought us.

IMG_2018

My little Gwendolyn inspired most of the pieces you see on my online shop.  Gwen is a free spirit and from the minute she was born, my desire to create and inspire kept growing stronger. Don’t get me wrong cleaning up my 4-year-olds vomit while breastfeeding my 6-month-old DID also inspire me to do something more with my day to day too BUT mostly I have always been a maker.

I had been dreaming about starting Love Gwen Jewellery for years but the universe decided to give me one giant kick up the ass to get my jewellery out there.

I was working for another jeweller in a tiny shop when I was robbed, in broad daylight, on my own. 5 men smashed through the windows and threatened to kill me with hammers. It was the most terrifying moment of my life. In an instant I thought I would die and never see my family again. They left with jewels and money and I was left coping with PTSD and raising 2 children under 4, whilst my husband went to work. It was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced.

LoveGwenLogoBlk

After that, I could never work in a shop again, I could barely cope with my day to day.  My work was always such a huge part of who I was creatively, so how would I work again and heal? Love Gwen Jewellery was finally born. It healed me from my trauma and made me see how much making others happy with my jewellery is what I have always needed to do. I could breathe when I was making and I could learn to be a good mum again too.

IMG_4822

Two months later, I hit another bump in the road. Cancer. I had grown a tennis ball size tumour in my armpit. It seems my stress and anxiety from the robbery had manifested into a huge lump. I still remember when the doctor told me. I skipped into the office thinking I was untouchable, I’d been through enough yeh? Wrong. Apparently I still had some battles to go. In the coming weeks I had major surgery and survived. Now missing an armpit and with one boob slightly lower, I was ok. I still kept Love Gwen Jewellery going and I remember doing all my Christmas orders 1 month later in a sling after surgery. Once again Love Gwen saved me.

It has been 3 years and between routine scans, anxiety, and support from family and friends Love Gwen Jewellery has thrived.
I shared my love and made pieces that people truly cherish – Corinne
IMG_1418
I’ve had Abby Gilmore, Constance Hall, and Celeste Barber all tell the world they loved their Love Gwen pieces and it has been an amazing ride. My hubby and my kids are so proud and they tell their friends at school, that mum will make them jewellery.  My son Beau has brought home a few little girls bracelets for me to fix which I love.
IMG_2698
All the jewellery I make is made with my own two hands, and every piece is personal. I promise it’s made to last.- Corinne
I do a lot of custom pieces which I LOVE and engagement rings.
My jewellery is sterling silver and gold, nothing is plated and all links are soldered, it really is made to last a lifetime. My jewellery won’t change colour or snap, never to be seen again the junk jewellery pile!
I make pieces for baby to adult, that will last their whole lives and it makes me so happy that something I made will be with them forever – Corinne
Another thing I do at Love Gwen which I really adore, is I get kids, or adults to write their own names or even the writing of a loved one that has passed, and I turn it into a name necklace for them. That is truly rewarding work.
IMG_6121

In times like these

Unfortunately jewellery is generally one of the first things to go when times get tough. It gets pushed to the back of the to do list. My customers are mostly Mumma’s who deserve to treat themselves and want to honour their families in jewellery. So when Mumma is trying to survive, she puts her wants and needs last.
It’s also a very hard thing to promote when you know people are struggling. We are all struggling.

Changes

I like all small business owners have had to make changes to the way I work. I have recently eliminated postage costs to customers. For now, I will pay for that. I have also made sure I offer sales whenever I can. My product quality will never change. The price of gold keeps going up but I’m keeping my prices as they are. I have been offering to send gifts directly to the receiver, so no one needs to leave the couch (the best part of online shopping!). A lot of mums won’t be out shopping for birthdays, and Mothers Day, so I’m happy to wrap it up and pop it in the mail on their behalf.
IMG_4948
To all my customers I want to let you know I am still here! I will be here for that birthday you can’t celebrate, that mum you can’t catch up with on Mothers Day, that 1st birthday that got cancelled. That Christening that you couldn’t go to.
What better way to show someone you love, you’re thinking of them, than a piece of jewellery that will last them their lifetime – Corinne

Small Biz Shout Out #1 Cakes by Carter

MELBOURNE
I’m so happy to be introducing you to Lisa for #1 in my ‘Small Biz Shout Out’ series. Not only does Lisa create the most incredible cakes right here in Melbourne, (I’ve eaten a few) she is also a genuinely good human. If ever you wanted to support a small business, this is the one for you. I mean, great human and gorgeous cake… Is there a better mix?
IMG_8445.JPG
Hello everyone! I’m Carter – Lisa Carter. My dear Qantas family, in Melbourne, where I worked for many years helped create the name of ‘Cakes By Carter‘ on a lonely nightshift, and the dream has been moving slowly since then.
Cakes by Carter was created out of a passion for home baking after making my first wedding cake back in 2002. Now, 18 years on I am still baking and specialising in cakes; all kinds of cakes. I offer novelty, wedding, proposal, baby reveal, cupcakes… you name it, I can do it! I also have a unique talent for decorating cookies using the freshest of ingredients, all hand made by me. Vegan, gluten free and egg free are some of our frequent requests, so no one is left out!
IMG_2234 (1).jpg
Cakes by Carter is a loyal member and of the CDAV (Cake Decorators Association of Victoria) and I have a genuine passion and love for what I do. I am proud to be a 6 time winner at the Royal Melbourne Show & Red Hill Show.
cakes 6.jpg
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on my business. From weddings to birthday parties, and all other events on hold, Cakes by Carter has had most bookings cancelled. For my small business this is huge. Looking at an almost empty booking diary is not what I was expecting at this point in the year.
Being home based and always maintaining a certificate in food safety, I can guarantee our practices are safe and adhere to new Covid-19 measures as put in place by the Government.I have recently updated my practices to include the addition of hair nets and face masks while continuing to wear gloves as always – Lisa Carter

To Melbourne, I would like to say, I am still operating. I’m still filling my kitchen with beautiful baking smells, and I would love to create something for your loved ones, especially at a time when we are all desperately searching for special connections.
Let me, Cakes by Carter help you surprise your loved ones, friends or work colleagues with a contactless delivery of cupcakes, cookies or a cake. If you know someone who has to stay home for their upcoming birthday why not have a gorgeous small cake delivered right to their door?

You can support Cakes by Carter on Instagram & Facebook

Covid-19 Making expats feel even further from home

pexels-photo-3764565.jpeg
Photo – Andrea Piacquadio

Covid-19 is throwing ‘life as we know it’ into something we have only ever seen in films. It’s pushed us to think long and hard about what we we really need, and shown us just how much we take for granted. (Not necessarily a bad thing?) We all have so many questions as we sit back and watch it unfold across the world, in ways we could have never imagined.

“We are in a war against an invisible killer,” UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock

For expats, living far from their loved ones, this pandemic hits us hard, not only because our every day life is fast becoming unrecognisable, but it’s hit us in the heart.

Whilst we are experts in conversing via video chat, and writing letters to friends in far off lands, nothing has prepared us for being helpless when seeing our loved ones in lockdown. We are only able to watch on as our older relatives need us now more than ever. Over 65’s in the UK are facing a long stretch of time at home in isolation, and when that includes your family members, and you’re so far away, it’s hard. A month ago, we could have jumped on a flight, and raced to the rescue if a parent or family member was sick, needed us, or worst case scenario passed away. Now we’re feeling shut off and we don’t know how long for.  Many expats are deeply concerned they may never get the chance to see some of their loved ones again.

My sister is a doctor in an NHS hospital. Last year she had lymphoma and faced a long battle against cancer, she has only been well enough to return to work full time in the last month. I’m terrified she will get sick and die and I will be stuck here in Australia. My Dad is also very vulnerable, and she won’t be able to visit in case she passes it on as she will be exposed at work. I am so scared I may never see them again. I’ve always thought that I could get home in 24 hours and now that’s not the case and I hate it – Chloe Reynolds

“I’m feeling far away”

Flights are being cancelled and border controls are being put in place to stop people spreading the virus. When you rely on flying to get you to your family, this can lead to feelings of claustrophobia and panic. We are too far away to pop a cooked meal on the doorstep of a loved one, or pop by and check on them (through the window), so who’s going to help them?

Lisa Fotios.jpeg

At a time when Age UK have stressed the importance of thinking of “practical” ways to help the elderly, such as running errands on relatives’ behalf or picking up supplies such as food and medication, it is tougher than ever to be overseas. You feel helpless. The only thing we can do is make an extra effort to check in on our local community, reach out to the more vulnerable people in our streets, and hope that people are doing the same for our family too.

My parents were due here early May. We haven’t seen them for almost 4 years. Also my 70+ dad has heart condition & mum weak immunity. Yes that distance suddenly got a long way away.  It is what it is, but gosh what I would do to have a hug from my parents right now  – Sarah Trett

With so many frightening scenes around the world, we have mixed emotions about the Covid-19 pandemic, but it’s important that we are brave, not just for ourselves but for our loved ones too.

It’s like a nightmare, my Dad passed away yesterday, Mum isn’t coping at all and my only brother is in isolation as my nephew is sick- Paulette Smith

At this stage it’s hard to ascertain how long we will be faced with restrictions or determine when will it be ‘safe’ for any of us to get home, so the most important thing for everyone to do, is keep in touch, keep strong and most importantly keep well.

I have a frail elderly mum who is 83 and living by herself in the UK. Luckily the church community are keeping an eye on her.
I have a brother who is a respiratory physician who will be very much at risk of catching the virus.
A sister in Belfast who helps run the breast cancer services whose services have basically stopped to push resources and manpower to care for those with the virus, leaving those who get sick with cancer and needing surgery having just to wait!
My other sister is a teacher … keeping teaching in her school for those children of key workers. Very anxious times. – Juliet Clayton

Despite all our worries, and our feelings of helplessness during this crisis, we must remember, this pandemic has the ability to segregate us all, but it absolutely has the capability to bring us all closer than we have ever been.

Cirque du Soleil has returned to Australia with its most acclaimed touring show, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities™.  Written and directed by Michel Laprise, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities™ is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm, set in the latter half of the nineteenth century, reality is quite relative indeed as our perception of it is utterly transformed.

Kurios 3.jpg

KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities™ had its world premiere in Montréal April 2014 and since its debut, the critics have been raving across North America:

“It is not to be missed on any account,” Chris Jones in The Chicago Tribune.

“KURIOS is the most enthralling, consistently over-the-top magical show Cirque du Soleil has sent our way in a long time,” Robert Hurwitt in The San Francisco Chronicle

Due to overwhelming demand, Cirque du Soleil recently announced the extension of performances in Melbourne. New performances from 31st March through 13th April are on sale now!!

Critics across North America, Japan and Singapore have been raving about KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities™. In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a scientist (“The Seeker”) is convinced that there exists a hidden world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. Out of his curio cabinet steps an international cast of 47 artists from 17 countries, a collection of otherworldly characters made up of world-class gymnasts, acrobats, contortionists, hand-puppeteers, yo-yo wizards, clowns, actors and musicians. Together they turn the Seeker’s steampunk world upside-down as they are guided by an energetic gypsy jazz, electro swing soundtrack.

The Interview- 5 minutes with Mr Snot Bottom

He’s The Willy Wonka of Weird, The Prince of Putrid, The King of Kids Comedy – and I got to ask him some seriously hard hitting questions, before he hits the stage for his upcoming shows in Melbourne! Yes, you guessed it,  it’s the disgustingly distasteful Mr Snot Bottom!

Returning by popular demand, Mr Snot Bottom has promised a beautiful, elegant and polite piece of performance about homework, princesses and lullabies… So expect a horrendous hour of the most appalling acting, stupidest scripts and just-dumb dialogue in a putrid performance of horrid humour, that will make you absolutely, utterly… adore every minute!

Star of the ‘Busy Bodies’ podcast on Kinderling and a Best Children’s Event Award Weekly Winner at Perth FRINGE WORLD 2020, Mr Snot Bottom promises a snot-load of grosstastic gags, horrible harmonies and just wrong routines perfect for weird kids five and up and their even weirder parents.

First things first… How did your Mr Snot Bottom journey begin? Have you always loved all things gross?

Back in 2011 a friend asked if I could perform something at their child’s birthday party as they knew I had a background in stand up comedy and children’s theatre. I said sure and then they said their child was adamant I make lots of fart jokes. So I made up the entire character  just for that party and it snowballed from there! So that one kid is entirely to blame!

Who was your favourite funny person when you were growing up?

The first stand up comedian I remember really enjoying and connecting with on TV was Jimeoin. When I grew up I actually got to introduce him on stage at a stand up show I was MC’ing which was amazing. It felt like a dream come true moment. For him as well I’m sure..

If you weren’t ‘Mr Snot Bottom’, what do you think you’d be doing right now?

I’d be Lady Gaga. Definitely. snot3.jpeg

We absolutely love your podcast!! Can you tell our readers a little about it?

Great thanks!  It’s a ten episode exploration of the human body and all the weird, amazing, incredible and of course disgusting facts about it. The most downloaded episode is ‘Digestion’ – go figure. It’s produced by Kinderling and can be found on iTunes and Google Play.

Tell us your favourite disgusting joke!

Q. What do you get when you go to the toilet in your cereal?

A. Weeeeeet-Bix

I made that one up. Well I didn’t really make it up – it’s part joke/part autobiography.

Monty (7) wants to know if you have ever actually ‘snarted’… (sneeze -farted)

A thought-provoking question, I’m glad you asked Monty. I’ve never heard that term ‘snarted’ before- you should copyright it.

I’m not sure if this is classed as a ‘snart’ but I can actually sneeze out of my bottom. That’s why I’m called Mr ‘SNOT’ Bottom. I fart boogies. Instead of blowing my nose I blow my… you get the picture.

Your latest show is running from the 3rd-5th April at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival!  What we can expect to see *or smell this year…. Eeek!

Well this year I’m trying something completely different. This year I’m promising a beautiful, elegant and polite piece of performance about homework, princesses and lullabies. It’s half politically injected social commentary – half Queen Elsa tea-party ballet concert.   What can possibly go wrong…..?

snot 5.jpeg

Thanks so much for chatting to us Mr S B! We cannot wait to see the show, when it hits the Melbourne International Comedy Festival!!

5 years in the making! Expat life & making friends

Friendship 5 years into expat life

It’s the final week of the school holidays, and I’m pondering while the kids are busy with their friends. Whilst they have fun and enjoy the diverse friendship groups they have built, I am sitting here wondering how on earth they have easily constructed a group of so many friends, each and every one so different in many ways! Children seem to have a talent for making friends regardless. I love that about them. I love the attitude they have toward making friends, and hearing the shouts of “sure, come and join in” I can’t help but wish adults were more like that!

I often chat to the children about how different our lives are to what we left behind in the UK, and it always comes back to ‘friendships’, mine and theirs. We all still pine for our ‘mates from home’ and talk fondly of the friends we miss.

Recently I’ve been aware of the importance of true friendship to them. I can see the kind things they do for their buddies, and I hear the way they talk about them too. I can see how, over time, they have carefully filtered their friendship group and worked really hard to nurture particular friendships, which I’m certain they’ve done without really thinking. How amazing is that!

I love that they have embraced every minute since we arrived down under, and although I never imagined that we’d still be here 5 years on, and I hadn’t considered we’d be building a future in Melbourne, watching us all with our newest friends, makes it seem so worthwhile.

Being 11,000 miles away from family and friends can make or break you!

The past 5 years have made us rely on each other for things that maybe in the UK we would have leant on someone else for. It has made us raise resilient kids who shine through new beginnings and it has taught us we’re pretty good at making new friends after all. For me, it has reinforced how much more important my friends, new and old, have become to me.

It’s no secret I’ve always been precious about my friends back in the UK. It has been the constant pull for me to up sticks, go back and slot into that old life we had before. The friendship thing has been hard for me, and still is today.

This summer however, I feel like I have turned a corner. I have realised for the first time since arriving in Australia, I can stop searching. I don’t need to keep looking, because I am completely content with the awesome men and women I call my friends here, and I am determined to make an even bigger effort to let them know just how much I appreciate them.

For a long time, friendship here was about making sure I have someone to help me, and if they come with a sense of humour that’s a bonus! I was looking for the friends I could text: “can you grab him from school, I’m running late” or “are your kids free to play today” because let’s face it, I took my two away from their friends and I’m feeling the guilts.

As an ‘expat’ the hunt for real friends can feel overwhelming.

Friend hunting is like online dating only with a much more critical audience, and ‘mums’ are far less willing to give you a go!!!

“Should I be funny Liv?”

“Should I be serious Liv?

“She’s English, she’ll be a laugh” ***Not always the case BTW

“I have to like her because her kids are in my kids class..”

“She has lots of friends so I should try and join her crew”

“Oh god I don’t even like Taylor Swift but now I am broke, and at her concert because I needed to fit in.”

**Yes, I’ve tried most things when it comes to sussing out potential friends.

I remember laughing with my girlfriends in the UK about getting a T-shirt printed with “I love gin, be my friend” and just wearing it to the park to see if I could ‘pull’ a mama. Probably would have been a quicker way!

5 years down the road, I’ve got friends who I can really call friends.

Now I have friendships that have grown, and mean so much more than the random play date because our kids like each other, or the “can you grab her for me please” text messages.

I have made sure that I’m not swapping numbers with someone just because I feel pressured into it. I’m not hanging with people just because our kids get on.. although that helps massively. I am happy to have created a group of ‘gal pals’ who are amazing, not just because they offer me support, but because they are interesting, talented, kind, generous, creative, funny, smart, brave…. and will drink wine with me at the drop of a hat!

The thing is, I was basing everything on first impressions and of course, “what do my kids get out of this?” However, friendships aren’t about first impressions, and my friendships shouldn’t be about what the kids can gain from it, it should be about me too!!

New friendships shouldn’t be one bit like online dating, they are about far more than that. They are built over time, between people who don’t feel any pressure at all to be anything other than themselves.

So, if you are new to a country, the new mum at a school gate, or you’re looking to switch it up a bit, my advice is, give it time.

No great thing is created suddenly, and all great achievements take time. You’ll know when you’ve found your crew!

Australian Open Kids Ballpark – Non stop entertainment!

If you thought the tennis was intense, you should see everything on offer for Kids & Families this year!! An unforgettable experience awaits!

The Australian Open is one of the worlds greatest sporting events, and this year, it’s even better… especially for the kids!

The incredible AO Ballpark presented by Emirates has officially opened at Birrarung Marr and has grown a whopping 4 x in size this year! That’s right, 4 times in size, taking up both the upper and lower terraces of Birrarung Marr. I told you it was whopping!

The AO Ballpark is the place to be for all of Melbourne’s cool kids, catering for a range of ages from the very small to the…well…very grown up! The fun isn’t all tennis focussed, far from it. Aside from the hot shots tennis courts where the kids can go all McEnroe on you, there are go karts, a zip line, LEGO fun, a super soaker battle zone, a nail biting sky flyer ride, a Ninja Warrior style obstacle course, a wonderful Disney themed section, and an awesome splash zone too! That’s where we’ll be cooling down!

There’s something for all ages from tiny tots to 10 year olds, and the NEW AO Hilltop especially for 10+ year olds.

It’s unbelievable I know, but all of this fun is on offer for just $5. The Australian Open kids ground pass ticket grants access to the new location in Birrarung Marr, encompassing both the Upper and Lower Terrace. For all you foodies, rest assured there are plenty of options, my personal favourite being the Pinchy’s Lobster bar! Yes maaaam’!

Offering kids of all ages even more summer fun than ever!

Let’s face it, we only go to the tennis to catch a glimpse of Rafa’s biceps, so for all the parents out there who’d like some time out to “watch the tennis” without having to keep one eye on the kiddos, get them booked into the awesome Kids Club and kick back!

The AO Kids Club is the first-ever childcare program offered at a Grand Slam, is even bigger and better than before, and in 2020 it’s in a new and easily accessible location at Deakin Edge at Fed Square. #winning

Liv’s top tips:

  • Take drink bottles. There are lots of refill stations!
  • Pack your hats!!!
  • Pack plenty of sunscreen. Although there are lots of shady areas, it is very exposed, and you’re outdoors for many hours.
  • Pack your swimmers and a towel. The changing facilities for families are great so don’t worry about where you can change!
  • Take a packed lunch, and snacks because food is pricey.. delicious, but pricey!
  • Save your pocket money for ‘merch’ as there is some awesome AO 2020 merchandise on offer!
  • Wear comfy shoes, and make sure the kids have closed toes as they won’t be allowed on the rides or to climb without them.
  • Get a good night’s sleep beforehand as it is a big day at the Open!

Have fun
