‘The Brickman – Wonders of the World’ at The Melbourne Museum!! It’s better than amazing!!

ryan
We’re here!!

So, The Wilson’s made it to the Melbourne Museum yesterday for the much anticipated opening of the biggest ever exhibition made entirely out of LEGO® bricks.  We were so excited to finally be at ‘The Brickman Wonders of The World‘…. The children were taken aback when they walked in. They literally didn’t know where to go first! Monty almost dived head first into the trough of LEGO® surrounding the beautiful Great Barrier Reef sculpture. Poppy ran straight in, desperately searching for the Eddie the Explorer mini figures hidden around the exhibition! Yay, she assured me she found 21!!

If ever there was a show to inspire creativity in kids, and really push them to go even further than they ever have before, then this is it! Ryan and his team absolutely blew us all away.

Honestly, it goes beyond words how incredible this is. Mr W was speechless! (Thank you Ryan!!)

There is something for everyone. The team have gone further than just building these awesome wonders of the world, they have told little stories in each one too! They have hidden lots of little mini figures in the sets, Sherlock Holmes makes an appearance, as does Guy Fawkes, and if you look hard enough you might even see Jack and Rose from the Titanic movie!

Ryan McNaught (Australia’s only Lego Certified Professional) told us how he used almost 4 shipping containers full of bricks to create this ‘Wonders of The World’ exhibition. He explained how tricky it is to transport the enormous, delicate, pieces once they are built, and that almost as much work goes into building the crates for transportation of these models as it does to make them. It really is an unbelievable feat of engineering.

Incredibly, it took Ryan and his team of 7 builders, 5,000 hours to finish creating the masterpieces on show, and they really will blow your mind.  How many times have you complained that building LEGO® with the kids is hurting your fingers, or breaking your nails (it’s surely not just me?)… Imagine the pain of  months and months of full time LEGO® building!!! I know, I know, the dad’s are all super jealous of Ryan’s job!

german couple
Loved this little german couple enjoying a beer together!

Mum’s and Dad’s, you’re going to have to brace yourselves as your little LEGO® fanatics are taken aback by what they see. This really is like nothing they (or you) have ever witnessed before. Everyone gets a chance to build their own sculpture, and Instagram it for a prize! Mine was hideous, and not worth the Instagram, Monty’s was awesome of course! Don’t be disheartened if  The Brickman completely ruins everything you have ever built for your children, and please be aware that nothing you ever build again will live up to this LEGO® wizardry.

Brickman ‘Wonders of the World’ at The Melbourne Museum opened yesterday, just in time for the Easter School Holidays. There’s no excuse to miss out. Honestly, this is a show that will earn you enormous parent points, and will excite and amaze the children at the same time. Interactive, immersive, and bloody brilliant! As always, the staff at the Melbourne Museum are friendly, helpful, super informative and really make an effort to make your experience the best it can be! There must have also been some LEGO® fairies watching over us all, as there was not one piece of LEGO® on the floor waiting for an unsuspecting mum to stand on….

BRICKMAN ‘WONDERS OF THE WORLD’ EXHIBITION

You cannot miss the shop on the way out!! The gang from Bricks To The World (LEGO® online retailer of the year) are there, selling all kinds of LEGO® imaginable. Once you have been through the exhibition you will not be able to resist what they have on offer. Just take a deep breath and hand over your credit card, the kids will love you that little bit more than they already do! Hey, LEGO® created a lot of love in our house yesterday, even though Mr W was building some sort of motorbike thing at the dinner table, instead of drinking his wine! If you happen to miss the shop (physically impossible, but I know some of you will try) you can head over to the website and order on there!!

“Nothing like this exhibition has ever been seen before, every model is brand new and way more detailed than anything I’ve ever created-  Ryan McNaught.

Alex & Luke- Make Your Parents Disappear!! It’s a hit!!

You’ll all be thrilled to hear Mr W and I survived the “Make Your Parents Disappear” show by the dangerously funny Alex and Luke yesterday! Yes, we’re still here, limbs and all to tell the tale of a wonderful mix of magic and mayhem inside the famous Spiegeltent.

Magic should always be exciting, mysterious and make you ooooh and aaaaah! My two love it, and so do I. When I was little I went to see the famous Paul Daniels, I was excited beyond belief!! All I remember is seeing Debbie McGee crawling behind one box, and creeping into another at the back of the stage. It was a bit of a let down to be honest! I was cringing, everyone else in the audience was cringing… Safe to say, there was absolutely none of this nonsense in the Spiegeltent yesterday! In fact, we are still trying to work out how they achieved some of their mind blowing tricks.

We had ‘googled’ Alex and Luke a few times, so we knew they were pretty good, and they didn’t disappoint. They baffled us all with their sleight of hand, made us laugh with their wacky jokes, and kept Monty and the rest of the rabble quiet for a whole hour. That’s a magic trick in itself!

Ok, so the show was for the kids, but I was giggling like a loopy teenager, and gasped far too enthusiastically a few times. I mean how do they shoot packs of cards out of their mouths??

They are proud winners of the Best Comedy Award 2014 at the Melbourne Magic Festival  and it’s obvious why.

These guys have had smash-hit shows at the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne International Comedy Festival last year, and now Alex and Luke are back and they’re looking forward to fooling you with their magic mastery.

They promised trickery of the highest order, and they delivered. The Wilson’s promise you will all LOVE IT!! Believe me, the whole family is in for a real treat this Easter, so get online and book!!!

Gut Feeling in the Making – Art Play

As it was mothers day in the UK today I thought it would be the perfect day to spend some quality time with my girl. We hardly ever get a minute to ourselves so off we went, full of smiles, waving frantically to the boys.. We hopped into the car and headed for Art Play. We have never been before and were so excited to be getting involved in ‘Gut Feeling in the Making’ a brand new interactive performance by Born in a Taxi (who I already know are pretty awesome).

We were promised an immersive, interactive journey through the human digestive system, from top to bottom. Oh yes, Poppy was to be turned into Poopy and boy was she excited. Happy Mother’s day!! It was a little less ‘breakfast in bed’, and a lot more tummy rumbling and gassy noises.

gut-feeling-mouth668
Gut Feeling in The Making

We were greeted by a lovely lady called Reeham, who was super friendly, and gave us lots of info on what we were about to embark upon. Benjie then came in to get the whole thing started. Rules: No shoes, no sharp things and no bashing into the side. (I am now thanking my lucky stars that Monty isn’t with us with his sword and his endless bouncing off walls). The children were given their  individual food group (a picture pinned to a t-shirt) and they were all champing at the bit to get in to the enormous pink mouth in front of us.

As if by magic, we heard some little voices, and all of a sudden two creatures appeared through the giant inflatable lips! They hopped out and introduced themselves; a few kids burst into tears, another one ran behind her mum, and the ‘bacteria’ proceeded to serenade us with a wonderful song about bottoms and guts! Poppy thought this was hilarious, oh, and I did too. Nothing funnier than bums, tum’s, guts and farts!

Once the ukulele was put away, and the kids had sorted if they were a protein, a fat or a sugar, (amazed that we grasped that one straight away) the children were ‘ingested‘ into a massive, anatomically correct (well, kinda), inflatable, human digestive tract. The ‘food’ is guided through it’s digestion by the Blabbermouthed Belly Bacteria and shown every detail as this gut turns food into energy. The large intestine (approx. 30 meters) is big enough to ‘stoop walk’, but you absolutely need to crawl through the small intestine (approx. 80 meters). Poppy loved it; I was a little clammy, but once I was in, and there was no going back, I was happily making my way toward the back passage like a well digested marshmallow!!

A morning of physical theatre where the kids get to watch real bacteria projected directly onto the stomach lining,  and then rather gracefully get projected out of the sphincter! I know!! And with the sound effects too!

How awesome to have the opportunity to be turned into poo.. No!! I mean… how awesome is it that our children can explore their creativity and share unique artistic experiences with professional artists, in such a wonderful, up close and personal space?

This performance was not only hysterically funny, a bit yucky at times, and pretty warm, it was also a wonderful lesson in the human body, which I know my 8 year old learnt a lot from. To be able to get inside the gut, with two hilarious ‘Gut Guides’ is by far the best way to learn, and the Q & A session afterwards just went on to prove how awesome an experience this was.

Another huge tick on our list of Awesome Expat Adventures!! Thank you Art Play & Born in a Taxi!!

Dandenong Market – A trip around the world one mouthful at a time!!

The fabulous feeling I get when I drop the children off at school, breeze out of the gates, and head out for a day of  gorging on donuts with friends is just too much to bear!

I have been desperate to get to Dandenong Market for ages, and so have my two local friends who joined me. What better way to spend a child free day? Friday, food and friends has to be the greatest combination in life!

Dandenong Market is a busy and bustling place, full of sights, sounds, smells, and bursting at the seams with wonderful produce. There truly is a world of taste, a treasure in every stall, and we were prepared with lots of canvas shopping bags, and heaps of room in our tummy’s!

Arriving at Dandenong Market you get a real sense of just how ‘global’ this market is. You really can shop the globe and eat the world, all under one roof. The market is alive with people selling, buying, eating, and enjoying themselves. We were making the most of everything on offer.

The ‘Munching Mums’ top purchases were:

Melina’s Bakery & Larder – We bought the most awesome sourdough loaf from Melina’s bakery, it was freshly baked, and delicious with my Saturday morning bacon! The cakes on this stall looked too good to eat. We gave it a go though!!

Dandee Donuts– We literally giggled with excitement when we were handed a bag full of hot, sweet, jammy goodness; we ate two each.. (can you imagine?) Then we bought 6 more, then 6 more on the way out, as we couldn’t have gone home without some spares!!! Even then dad missed out!!

Taylor’s Orchards– We managed to get our hands on some organic yumminess at Taylor’s Orchards. Perfect purple carrots, beautiful onions, and some super crunchy pears. I loved the lay out of this stall, the wooden crates, the smiling staff, the bunting… I’m a sucker for the pretty things.

Sam’s Spice & Grocery– Just follow the sweet smell of the wonders of the world, and you will find Sam’s Spice & Grocery. The staff have the biggest smiles, and the spices are incredibly beautiful. For all you avid Masterchef’s out there, this is the place to buy your ingredients. I came away with a huge tub of Murray River salt at a bargain price.

Ross Pecora Cheeses -Melbournians are obviously big fans of the cheese on this stall which has been at Dandenong market for thirty years and Ross Pecora’s reputation speaks for itself. The selection is awesome, and for three cheese loving mamas, decision time was a little tense. We went with the brie and the blue. All has now disappeared, along with four bottles of wine and our pears!! It was divine!!!

After an exceptional shopping spree, we had genuinely worked up an appetite, so we headed to the food hall area. We couldn’t make a firm decision on what we wanted, there was so much choice, and really, we wanted one of everything. We went for a ’round the world’ selection.

Our lunch selection came from:

King of Falafel– I can’t walk past a decent Tabouleh salad without buying one. This one was super special, and was first on the table.

PiqNiq Hut–  We bought two lots of Sri Lankan street food.  The ‘devilled chicken and roti’ was out of this world and so reasonably priced. Yuuuuuum!

Sansan’s Dumpling House – The sweetest lady you have ever laid eyes upon serving up traditionally hand made dumplings and soft buns. Oh wow, what a treat… Dumplings and golden pies were added to the table, and we began our feast.

Shopped out, full of incredible food, and the school run looming, we headed home with heavy bags, and a promise that this would now be a regular ‘thing’ for us.

I really can’t see why anyone would choose a supermarket over Dandenong Market. Easy parking, magnificent produce, wondrous plates of food, and change jangling in my pocket!

Thank you Dandenong Market for an all round Fabulous Feasting Friday!

‘Spare a thought’ #3- Leaving Huw Edwards behind!

On a day when ‘decent news’ is all we want and so incredibly important to us as expats living so far from home; I thought it was the perfect time to share with you this wonderfully written article from Anna, The Faraway Mum. Anna tells us how she feels, having left the “good old Beeb” behind.

Faraway Mum
Enter a caption

Anna Demetriou lives in Philadelphia, USA with her husband and daughter. She blogs at The Faraway Mum about the highs and lows of embarking on new parenthood a long way from home, and can also be found on Instagram (@the_faraway_mum) and Facebook (@thefarawaymum).

When Olivia kindly asked me to guest-author a blog on the subject of ‘those we left behind’, I knew straight away what I wanted to write about. Like many of us living abroad and far away from home, of course the thing I miss most is family, followed closely by friends, Yorkshire tea and Mr Kipling’s Cherry Bakewells (usually, but not always in that order – depends how tough a day it’s been with the toddler). But as a Brit who has now been living in America for 2.5 years, I’ve learnt to deal with the gaps between trips and fixes of home comforts, and in their place the thing I am most craving in these chaotic and uncertain times is something I used to take completely for granted: unbiased and reliable news.

Back home in Britain, I certainly wasn’t a current affairs whizz, but I would have described myself as a fairly regular consumer of news. It was just part of the daily routine: I’d listen to the headlines on the radio in the morning, browse the pages of the Evening Standard on the commute home, and spend the week getting through the supplements of the Saturday Guardian that I hadn’t managed to finish at the weekend. I knew the relative biases – both in terms of subject focus and political leaning – of each of these news outlets so could take their respective positions with a pinch of salt, trying to use them to inform but not dictate my own views. If in doubt about an issue (which I frequently was), my end-of-the-day dash to finish marking a set of books and iron an outfit for the following day would normally be done whilst watching the 10pm news on BBC1 anyway – a chance to consolidate the day’s happenings with factual reporting and, where opinion was expressed, take comfort in the fact that I was being presented with both sides of the argument. It’s there at the heart of the organisation’s values: ‘Trust is the foundation of the BBC: we are independent, impartial and honest.’ It feels very un-British to laud such aims without a hint of cynicism, but damn, that’s pretty admirable isn’t it?

Here in America, my news consumption is very different. Perhaps because I no longer commute, or enjoy the luxury of lazy weekend mornings lounging with the weekend papers over coffee (one of the sheer joys of pre-parenthood I never thought to savour before the arrival of my daughter), my news is now either filtered through social media and snatched during nap time, or absorbed in a state of end-of-the-day exhaustion when my husband and I finally crash in front of the TV. I try to read articles online from a range of sources, but I’m well aware of the danger of the ‘echo chamber’, whereby the stories I gravitate to are those shared by friends on Facebook – friends who, by and large, have similar experiences and outlooks to me. And the television news here is so different to what I’m used to at home – in my opinion, far poorer for it. In my experience (and I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have time to browse the hundreds of channels available on US cable, so I may be looking in the wrong places), the news is either very local – concerned exclusively with happenings in our city and surrounding areas, not even looking to state-wide issues, let alone national or (heaven forbid) international stories – or it focuses almost exclusively on political news with a strong ideological leaning.

Honestly, over the last two years you’d have thought this country was operating without an incumbent president with almost a quarter of his time left in office – such was the dominance of coverage of the Democratic and Republican primaries and their candidates’ every moves, and then the election itself of course. Obama and his domestic agenda, and any international news (unless it had a direct impact on the election), hardly got a look-in. It’s not difficult to see where some of the appetite for the insular, nationalist agenda pursued by the Trump campaign has come from…..

Perhaps the most difficult thing to stomach about TV news here is the editorial style embraced by all the big networks. Why waste screen time on objective, fact-based reporting, when you can spark an argument between two equally opinionated ‘experts’ and have them shout each other down until it’s time to cut to a commercial break? (And yes, of course the commercial nature of the news networks is in large part responsible for their subjectivity – another piece of this endlessly frustrating puzzle). The prime-time evening shows take it even further, with a sole presenter who spends lengthy segments opining down the lens on their own views, often posturing and speculating with limited facts which succeeds in little else than riling the audience. I find myself turning off in frustration (honestly, sometimes in disgust) even from the channels whose positions I ideologically tend to sympathise with, because so much of it is unsubstantiated hot air.

Is it any wonder that America is currently so divided? That Trump is succeeding in convincing so many millions that traditional media outlets are the enemy? That ‘fake news’ allegedly played such a role in determining how many people voted on Election Day? The TV media make it hard for the public to trust them, because they make no attempt to hide their bias and often pursue speculative agendas without supporting evidence; as a result, people lose confidence and just switch over, burying their head in the sand of some uncontroversial home improvement show or reality TV dating extravaganza (guilty). And that’s truly a frightening thing at a time and in a climate when all over the world, perhaps more than ever, we arguably need to be better informed than we ever have been before.

So yes, right now one of the ‘things I left behind’ that I miss the most is a daily dose of the good old Beeb. And if you could pair my 10pm Huw Edwards fix with a living room full of family and friends, a strong cuppa and a cherry bakewell, you’d find me in seventh heaven.

Alex and Luke’s – Make Your Parents Disappear

Have you ever been tempted to make your parents disappear? This is a must see for you!

AlexLuke650x370

Alex and Luke are Aussie superstars in the magic world.  The judges and the audience of Australia’s Got Talent were completely flabbergasted by their act last year as part of the Gentlemen of Deceit trio (WATCH THIS NOW), and now Alex and Luke are back at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with more of their hilarious magic in glorious 3D. They are proud winners of the Best Comedy Award 2014 at the Melbourne Magic Festival and you can see them at the  Arts Centre Melbourne very soon indeed!

These guys had smash-hit shows at the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne International Comedy Festival last year, and now Alex and Luke are back with more amazing magic to fool us parents. Ok, I don’t mind being made to disappear, but fooled! No way!!

Alex and Luke spend their days at magic school (I know right!!) learning marvellous magic instead of boring times tables. But even at magic school Alex and Luke can’t escape dreaded homework! Ugh! Sigh!

These guys need your help to pull off the ultimate magical feat, to put an end to homework once and for all. Come and help them make their parents disappear! Yes, it does say disappear!

They promise trickery of the highest order, and I’ve heard incredible things about the squishy banana and the talking whiteboard!

Look, if I’m brave enough to take my two, then it’ll be a breeze for the rest of you!

Believe me, the whole family is in for a real treat this Easter!

We are not gluttons, we’re explorers of food!

market

South Melbourne Market has been a treasured inner city landmark and a favourite amongst locals and visitors since 1867. It is the quintessential village market, a place where people come not only to purchase fresh food, but to meet, eat, drink, shop, discover, share and connect.

We took two hungry ankle biters to the market on Saturday morning and we were thrilled with everything it had to offer. As soon as you walk in your senses become alive with sights and smells of all the wonderful products on sale. Having said that Monty just demanded the usual packet of Mentos, and threw an absolute wobbler because we couldn’t find any! Not even remotely satisfied with the plethora of lovingly made food on offer. Little “bleeper”.

There is coffee to top all coffee, fish, meat, flowers, clothes, shoes, jewellery, cheese, wine, oysters, pies, cakes, freshly made pasta, honestly the list goes on and on. People from all over Melbourne and from afar come to spend their morning buying fresh produce, relaxing with their friends and filling their baskets with top notch treats!

The Wilson’s top thrills this weekend were:

  • The most dreamy, fluffy, scrumptious donuts from La Lapa
  • The delicious meat on offer at Hagens Organic Butcher was second to none!
  • The magical Terrarium’s at The Terrarium Laboratory caught my eye. I am desperate for one!
  • The kids loved The Super Cool Kid, and also enjoyed the colouring in, and being able to measure themselves on the height chart! Anything to keep them busy right?
  • Merchants of Change is my kind of shop! All things People, Planet and Purpose, and uber cool too, that you could ever wish for!
  • Inside the Looking Glass wooed me with their awesome selection of jewellery, and funky patterns. If only I had won the lotto last week! One of everything please!
  • Oh the joy on the kids faces when they spied Spin South Melbourne. Scooter, skateboard and bike heaven.. Lots for the grown ups too!
  • I managed to pry Mr W’s wallet out of his grasp and spend some of his hard earned cash on some awesome crockery from In2 Homewares. So much lovely stuff to choose from.
  • The Fresh Pasta Shop was mind blowing! So many options for dinner, it all looked delish, and I was running out of room in my bag and my tummy….

We loved the excitement of seeing everything the market had to offer visitors, from beautiful flowers and groceries, to original clothing and accessories. There were plenty of shops for the children to have a look round; they managed to touch everything they could see, and spend their pocket money too. It really is a great place to go to fully support the local community who are working tirelessly to bring you the best of the best that Melbourne has to offer.

South Melbourne Market has a full calendar of live music, events and activities. It is a happy and experiential place that celebrates the senses. Get yourselves down to South Melbourne Market, you never know what may delight you first!

The Truth is… I miss you! An expat’s heart!

I wonder if we think of each other at the same time!

I wonder whilst I am sitting here looking out on a different land, if you are looking upon that green grass, the landscape that is so familiar to me.

I wonder if you ever think of me whilst you’re doing the things we used to do together.

I wonder if you try to call me by accident as much as I do you.

I wonder if you still miss me as much as you did a year ago.

I wonder if that longing I feel in my heart makes yours ache too.

I wonder if you look at your children, watch them grow and ever wonder what mine are doing right at that moment.

I wonder if you pray for the children’s friendships and hope they stand the test of time.

I wonder if everything has stayed the same!

I wonder if you still save a seat for me at dinner. It’s strange to think that those little quirky “we miss you” things may soon disappear from your girl’s nights out.

I wonder if you have saved a space in your life for me, for when I return with my arms flung open, to tell you I’m home, and start all over as if I never left.

I wonder if we will ever go back to exactly where we left off, all those years ago.

Please remember me. Remember us. Remember everything we had before this adventure of mine began. I took you with me, I took all of you, I had you tucked away in my heart, and I will always return to our friendship no matter how long I am away!

The truth is, I miss you. I miss the laughter that makes our faces ache. I miss our children playing. I miss our chats. I miss our moans. I miss our gin and tonics at inappropriate times of the day. I miss the world with you. I miss our time together. I miss our nights out. I miss hearing about your day. I miss afternoon tea in your garden. I miss your enthusiasm. I miss your kindness. I miss you knocking on my door. I miss seeing your car drive past. I miss your face. I miss your company. I miss your uniqueness. I miss stealing a squirt of your perfume when you’re not looking. I miss the jokes that we talked about for years.

friends

The truth is, I miss you, I miss all of you, I miss everything we had.

So hold me dear even though I am far, keep the chair free for me, I will be coming home.

Eureka – We have found the Skydeck

Netball nailed, starving kids, and a day of fun planned, we jumped into the car, threw some stale muffins at the brats in the back and headed to The Eureka Skydeck, on the 88th Floor (a whopping 285 meters above sea level) of the incredible Eureka Tower!

This truly is an unbelievable Melbourne icon. Looking up at this tower, it’s hard to imagine how on earth we are going to be able to stand at the top and look down, especially as Poppy is already having palpitations at the thought! The Eureka tower is 297meters high, gold plated and stands as proud as punch next to the Yarra river. You can’t miss it, and you definitely don’t want to either.

We were ushered through security (I was praying Monty was going to behave), and into the lift. It travels so fast you almost blink and miss the journey! We arrived at the 88th floor in no time at all, all poking about in our ears as they desperately needed popping! We stepped out of the lift, a little apprehensive about how high up we were, however, as soon as we clapped eyes on the view we all gasped. We gasped the biggest gasp we have ever gasped!! The view was was spectacular, astounding, stunning,  incredible, remarkable, dazzling.  I’m pretty sure Monty said “bloody hell;” I just walked toward the floor to ceiling windows in awe, pretending he wasn’t with me! The view is not only breath-taking, but the Eureka Sky deck is by far the best observation deck we have ever been in; and we’ve been in a few.  There is so much to see, to learn and to photograph. (*note to self, empty iPhone albums).

Walking around the deck, you get to see the whole of Melbourne, the parks, the sports centres, the bustling lanes full of shoppers. You get to see Melbourne from the best vantage point. As the highest public observation deck in the Southern Hemisphere, Eureka claims to offer a “visual masterpiece,” they’re not wrong.  The little telescopes they have highlighting the main attractions in the city are wonderful, we all loved them! Monty spent ages staring down at the MCG! Happy cricket fan right here! The Eureka Skydeck is the most wonderful way to get your head around where things are in relation to everything else! Great for everyone, tourist or local! It’s like staring down at a moving map of the most liveable city in the world! Are we the luckiest ducks you know?

Once we had made our way around the viewing deck oohing and aaaaahing, and I had stopped praising Mr W for bringing us to this awesome city, we headed to ‘The Edge’. This was the part of the experience I had least been looking forward to if I’m honest. I’m not a massive “heights” fan, Poppy is trembling! Honestly, we were all a little apprehensive!!

We were kindly asked to put covers on our shoes so as not to scratch the glass, the kids loved this as we looked like we had pixie feet! The man in charge asked us not to jump around or take any belongings into the box for safety reasons. I took a deep breath, smiled and pretended I was thrilled to be entering this glass box!  Here goes! We took our children by the hand and headed into the world’s first and only Edge Experience – we were in a glass cube, holding on for dear life. The door closed, the cracking glass sound effect made me jump out of my skin, and we began our journey outwards from the side of the 88th floor.  With a little shuddering and pretty terrifying sound effects  within a few seconds The Wilsons were suspended almost 300 meters high above Melbourne city, standing on glass! Yes glass!!! I know!!!!!!! Monty knocked the door and was let out, the rest of us lasted a bit longer. You know who was the least terrified… Poppy! Tim was pretending to be Mr Cool, but I could see the terror in his eyes, bless!!!

Aside from the hysteria of being in a glass box above the streets of Melbourne, it was the most fantastic experience. It’s like nothing we have ever done with the children. It is a view like no other, and if you can brave the cube you will not be disappointed.

We survived the Edge, we posted postcards from the highest postbox in the world, we ate icy poles over looking the city below, and we let the children dangle themselves off the side of the building too! (That’s a joke, it’s trick photography for goodness sake).

We had such a great day out, there were no tantrums, no arguments, just pure enjoyment, smiley faces and lots of gushing about this wonderful city! I’m definitely going again, maybe on my own nest time, so I can really soak up the views in peace whilst sipping on an espresso, reminding myself what a bloody lucky lot we are!

Blogger Recognition Award – Like an Oscar but with flowers!!

So, last night whilst I was shovelling dark chocolate down my throat and watching trashy tv, my phone beeped. I nearly choked on my nutty, chocolatey delights when I read that the beautiful Expats who blog at Thexpats nominated The Wilsons of Oz for a ‘Blogger Recognition Award’! I know right! Exciting stuff.

This is the first time I have properly believed that people are reading my blogs. Like really reading them!! I mean, looking at them enough to like them and then nominate us, is pretty good hey!! Even more wonderful is that the blogger who nominated us is based in the United Arab Emirates, which I think of as a very special “home” in my life’s journey, after having a wonderful adventure at high school in Abu Dhabi.

My Blogging Journey

As we were setting off on our Australian adventure, a dear friend threw a comment at me along the lines of, “you should start a blog about all this”; and that was that! I sat at Heathrow airport a week later, Monty vomiting into a Tesco carrier bag, thinking why oh why am I writing about this hell of a journey that hasn’t even started yet! I had no idea that two years on, the children would be practically native, I would be getting used to the beef sausages at the Bunnings Warehouse Sausage Sizzle, and I would no longer yearn for Marks and Spencer’s chocolate biscuits.. (ok that last one is a lie).

I blog to keep myself out of the shops, and to keep in mind how lucky we are to be here. Blogging is a great way for me to connect with friends and family back home, but also other expats and families wanting to travel. I’m doing it too, so I can print it all off one day and hand it to my children for them to show their children and make them realise just how enchanting the world really is if you just take that step out of your comfort zone. (And to remind them what bloody awesome parents they had, so they pick a great nursing home).

My advice to new bloggers

Be true to yourself. It’s something I am constantly being told to stick to,  I tell myself as often as I can, and I think is really important. Be honest and true to who you are and people will respond to that.

My Nominations

I’ve chosen blogs that I really enjoy following and have turned to again and again. (I didn’t choose 15 as I wanted this to be real, and focus on the talent that I personally like)

  • The Expat Mama – I love her style, her pictures and her expat adventures. Singapore is definitely on my list after following this blog.
  • Smiths Holiday Road – Proper adventurous family, the blog to go when you need to kick yourself up the backside and get out exploring! No excuses!
  • The Unsung Mum – witty, laugh out loud, honest, and there for me when I think it’s just ‘my life’.
  • MissMorni Penni – This lady makes me realise how lucky we are to be in such an incredibly awesome part of the world. The ability to see the beauty in everything, especially the ‘Mornington Peninsular’ is evidently her talent. Check her Insta if you don’t believe me!
  • Brummy Mummy of 2 – She’s honest and very true to herself and her audience. Emma claims to sometimes be a ‘crap wife’, hurrah…. me too!
  • The Honest Dad – Because all dads need this guy in their life! If you have a rubbish hubby, this could make you insanely jealous! First time parents, this is a must read! Parents who are well into parenthood, it’s worth it to see how beautiful the beginning was, and how quickly we have forgotten..! Or is that just me?

I really hope you all get chance to enjoy checking out the above blogs!
