Boxes and boxes and boxes galore!!

They day finally came! 8:30 and the guys turned up to collect or borrowed furniture, to make way for our own things!  To say I was pleased to get rid of the ENORMOUS top loading washing machine is an understatement! How I didn’t fall in is a mystery to me!

Weirdly I was feeling all emotional (not like me at all, I know!). Not sure whether it was because I was longing to see our pictures on the walls  or whether it was seeing how emotional the children were about receiving their long lost toys! So the rooms were emptied within an hour and then the chaos began!  Thank god for Peppa Pig!!

The waiting was finally over!  Two removalists (because removal men is sexist and lots of women do removals here!) arrived, did a quick walk around to see where everything was going, and they disappeared to the truck to start the process! Norm (the local nosey Parker and ‘The Anchorage’s’ chairman) was on hand to… Well…. Tell us not to make a mess, not to upset the brickwork, not to knock any bollards over…. And insisted on ambling past every twenty minutes pretending he was on very important business, when really he was being a great big nosey Parker!

The removalist handed me a tick sheet, and asked me to tick off every box that came through the door! Easy job, if there were 10 boxes! We had 157 boxes and they were coming through the garage thick and fast! It was like bingo on speed! Totally frazzled after the 20th box I had to get Tim to do some ticking! What with the noise of ‘Peppa Pig at the museum’ and the guys shouting numbers in strong Aussie accents I was overwhelmed! Ok, so now you’re all thinking “I watch neighbours, Australian accents are easy to understand!” Think again! It’s a little tricky sometimes! Honestly the amount of times an Aussie has said “how you going?”, to me and received a confused “um… Going fine… Um nowhere!?” Damn I must get with it!!! I have an Aussie lingo book by the bed so I will get there eventually!

In typical Wilson fashion the unpacking was chaotic! Every box that came in from 830 Monty would say “is that my scooter? Is it?” And sure enough Montys beloved scooter was the final item off the container at 5pm! By which point he was so busy playing with his trucks he wasn’t fussed!

For anyone thinking of moving to the other side of the world, make sure you have a really thorough clear out before packing!! This, I thought we had done! Until I noticed on the dressing table a baby names book (??? No we’re not! Ever!) and the instruction booklet for a breast pump! I didn’t even bother with that hellish exercise with Monty, so that was nearly 7 years old! To be fair, we emptied our whole house and rarely visited attic in Somerset into a container so we were bound to have bought some Oddities with us!

After 12 hours of shifting and lifting,  and breaking up empty boxes, we were in, the guys had left and we had even hung some pictures on the wall! I really wanted to sit down, make a pot of tea and dunk a digestive in it! That would have been weird seeing as I don’t drink tea, but I wanted to use my beautiful Emma Bridgewater tea pot that I have so missed!! In fact, I wanted to do lots of strange things, I wanted to make some pesto with my Magimix, get the coffee machine going, put some washing on in “MY OWN MACHIIINE”. I wanted to have a bath with my lovely oils, I wanted to wear my wonderful Dubarry boots, and I wanted to watch my sex in the city DVDs! Ok, so all at once was probably a bit much! In fact, I haven’t done any of those things as yet! The washing machine isn’t even installed as the pipes weren’t packed! Joy!

So we are just over 7 weeks into our Australian adventure, and today it no longer feels like we’re on holiday! We have set up home, and it feels good! The children scooted to school, the sun was shining, I was wearing clothes I had forgotten I owned!

It’s a happy day in Sydney! The Wilsons are getting on track!

Don’t talk to me about setting up satellite TV though or installing the internet as I may bite!!

Put em up, put em up!!!

We’ve nearly completed week 2 in the house! I say ‘the’ house as it doesn’t feel like home yet! If anything, it feels a little depressing! Not because we don’t like it, or it’s not nice, it’s just cold and empty with the bare minimum furnishings! We had been told our beloved belongings would arrive tomorrow, which has now been delayed by a week! “A week? Only a week?” I hear you say!!! Honestly, I wept, in fact I think I may have been heard sobbing to myself! Ok, I know there are worse things happening in the world, but right now, 10,000 miles from home, with no curtains, and only 3 pairs of shoes, this is BAD news!  The kids are missing their teddies, Tim is missing all our photographs on the walls, and I am missing my Magimix! In fact I am missing all things ‘kitchen’. We have been given 4 plates, 4 bowls, 4 forks etc etc! The three saucepans we have, are exactly that, pans for sauce! Slighty too small to make enough porridge for baby bear, let alone feed Goldilocks too!  So, next Friday, I am crossing my fingers, (feel free to join in) I will be lying on my sofa, wrapped in a wonderfully snugly welsh blanket, sipping warm tea from an Emma Bridgewater mug, whilst flicking through my much missed ‘Domestic goddess’ cookbooks! This doesn’t mean on Saturday morning I will have miraculously turned into Nigella, but bloody hell I will be loving making our home all homely!!

Apart from the moment sobbing about the furniture, we have had a pretty good week! Poppy has settled in petty well at school, although she is “hating” having to play the recorder! To be honest, I am hating her playing the recorder! (I knew those earplugs from the plane would be a winner). She is playing lots of sports, getting lots of homework, and she seems pretty cool about the whole thing! So, that’s a weight off my mind!

Monty and I spend our days pottering about at home, playing at the maccas play area, and food shopping!

Monty had his second swimming lesson this week! After much whingeing and screaming, “I dont like the black lady, I don’t like the black lady” (referring to the colour of the teachers hat last week )  over and over again, I managed to bribe him with a new digger and he got into the pool! I am pretty sure everyone in Fitness First thinks he is a massive racist! I didn’t have time to explain!

So it’s Thursday, which is library day for us! We are off to get some books, have a play and then it’ll be time for a nap! Walking Pops to school is wearing Monty out! Yippee! Two hours peace in the afternoon is bliss! Almost makes me want another! Oh, no hold on, not when this is in our doorstep!

Or maybe that would help!

You’ve always had the power!

It’s 1155 and I am sitting eating my lunch with Monty, enjoying Tom and Jerry! It’s a bit early for lunch, but we were hungry after a busy morning, and it’s either lunch or folding the laundry! That, and Poppy will be having her lunch right now, outside in the playgound, so we thought we’d eat at the same time! It’s bizarre being here, at home without Poppy!

It is her first day at Sylvania Heights Public School and I am proud to say she was incredibly excited! We met her class teacher yesterday and she was lovely! Most of you will know by now, Poppy has always been a little emotional going to school! Whether it’s habit, or separation anxiety or something else, I’ll never know, but this morning was pretty stressful for me! Every time she paused I was there saying “come on now, such an adventure, what an awesome experience, you’ll make friends so quickly, wow you’re so lucky!” Anything to keep her from crying. (To be honest I don’t think she was that bothered!). I never know what’s the best thing to do!

We walked to school, a lovely 15 minute stroll through the houses, with enough sticks to keep Monty occupied!

How that child can turn a stick into ANYTHING amazes me! He adores a stick!

When we arrived at the school gates, children were piling in, laughing, singing, the playgrounds (there are many) were full of children playing very organised games of rugby, and football, no teacher in sight!  Every single child was wearing a broad rimmed sunhat! The “no hat, no play” policy is a no brainer here even in the winter! We made our way to the steps at the bottom of Poppy’s classroom so she could wait for her “Buddy” to come and meet her! So cute! I could see Poppy’s little face, overwhelmed (120 kids in UK school to 700 here), nervous, bottom lip with a tiny wobble, I was welling up and thinking ” this cannot be easy for her! Why have we done this? Oh gosh lets ditch and go home,” then Miss Ray (like a ray of sunshine) waltzed round the corner and saved the day! She has the biggest smile, bright red lipstick and I wanted to hug her! (Note to self: stop hugging the locals) Poppy went off quite happily and Monty shouted at the top of his voice “bye Poppy, my am so proud of you! My love you!” The girls collapsed into a heap of giggles! Phew that made everything better!

Monty and I left the girls to it, and walked home! Via McDonald’s! Not for a “Maccas” brekkie, but for a huge coffee and a play! It has the best undercover playarea and its where we have been told to go for a play locally! This was a good shout as we managed to meet a really nice lady (originally from the uk) who was meeting her daughter and grandchildren! Yippppeeee we made some friends!! We hung out for a few hours, they invited me to watch their 3 yr olds swimming lesson so we could see if Monty would like to join, such nice friendly folk! So we’ve had a good morning all in all!  It’s pretty tough being on your own in a strange place with the kids! I’m trying my best to keep busy even if it means the children have two ice creams a day!! Just to get out!

This afternoon I am popping Monty into the buggy and I’m walking up to a local cafe to meet the PTA mums from school! I hope they’re just as friendly as everyone else I have met so far! Can’t let Poppy down! Need to get her some play dates! So, I’ll get the washing on the line, prepare supper, load the dishwasher and be on my merry way! I am determined to settle in, I know we have done the right thing! Could someone just send me a galaxy ripple please!!!

Follow The Yellow Brick Road!

What a busy weekend we have had! So busy that it’s taken me two days to get over it! Think we covered about 20k on foot!

The weekends are such a treat! We’re all together and we get a whole two days to do our own thing! On Saturday we really made the most of the beautiful weather and we went to the Saturday market at the ‘entertainment quarter’ and centennial park.

It was two bus rides (imagine) but totally worth it. (www.eqmoorepark.com.au)

It was full of foodie delights! The scent of garlic prawns, and paella wafting over us as we sat watching the children on the bouncy castles was too much! If only it had been lunchtime. Not that I think there is ever an inappropriate time to eat garlic prawns! There were rows of stalls run by really enthusiastic local producers. Fruit and veg, meats, nuts and seeds, coffee and cakes, breads, and a bagel stall! I must have walked past these guys about 8 times! Looking, smelling, drooling… I had to resist the temptation this time, but one day soon I will be sinking my teeth into a babka! (Nutella&hazelnut)

 http://www.brooklynboy.com.au

The markets here are like our farmers markets back home but supercharged! There is such a mix of flavours, you can travel the world just tasting what’s on offer! The children were happy to be entertained too! There were donkeys, bouncy castles, live music, and even a huge paddling pool with those terrifying water zorbing things! All in all a great start to our weekend! We sat and had lunch while Monty slept (oh I am loving the buggy this week) and I honestly felt at home! (Cheesy right?)

Having never been to Australia before now, I quizzed friends on what I should expect! Well, they were right! It’s relaxed, it’s sunny, it’s geared up for the outdoors, everyone is friendly, oh.. And the TV is crap! Yes you were all right! It all seems a bit too good to be true right now! If any of you are thinking about making the big move DO IT! Do it now or you’ll never know!

Centennial park was a walk from the market, so we wandered over to see what was there! Oh this is going to sound so annoying (if you’re still reading!) but it was lovely! Huge parkland, horse riding, lakes, walks, pelicans. Then Tim took us into the swampy foresty part. To say there were hundreds of bats would be an understatement!

All hanging in the trees asleep! Until they decided to wake and fight with each other! Bleugh! I was pushing the buggy along a slippery wooden path doing that “I’m not scared, don’t let the kids see I’m scared” thing! Pushing the branches out of my face, knowing I would be the one with the bloody funnel web spider on my back!!

Sunday was pretty civilised!  A swim, a workout, a coffee, and a trip to the supermarket filled the morning! Vivid Sydney had started on the Friday and we were itching to get into the city to see the lights! (Vividsydney.com)

It is still pretty surreal being in Sydney, but this evening was really unbelievable! As soon as the sun set at 1730 the lights began switching on! We sat at darling harbour and watched the lazer and fire show on the water! The air was filled with “oohs and aaaahs” it was wonderful! The children were thrilled to be out in the dark eating ice creams, let alone seeing such an awesome display! We tried to jump on a ferry to get to Circular Quay but it was rammed! Worked in our favour though as we decided to walk the headland! The streets were all lit up and I felt like Dorothy arriving in Oz! Magical! Every corner we turned we came across another beautiful display of lights!

We grabbed some supper from the organic food truck. We were starving and a huge queue for food is always a good sign!(www.agaperestaurant.com)

We had veggie nachos with a side order of salty chips, it was yum! These guys stop all over Sydney, you can grab the app and find out where they are each night! They stop in the park by our apartment on a Friday but this was the first taste we have had! We’ll definitely be stopping by soon!

By 2230 Monty had passed out so we jumped on the train and headed home!

Even Poppy (who “never gets tired”) was teary and needed a firemans lift home!

How lucky are we!! 💖

Are you a Good witch or a bad witch?

Had a really busy few days here! We’ve been to the park, gone home, back to the park, home to bed, up and back to the park! Oh and throw in about 17 trips to the supermarket for forgotten items and that’s us!!!!

It really is awesome for the kids! The parks are brill, and the weather is too! This is winter! I just can’t believe how warm it is!  Yesterday was 25 degrees and we were making the most of it! Again mine were the only children enjoying the fountains, not sure whether the other kids are bored of splashing or their shuddering parents genuinely think it’s too cold!?!?

We only have one week left in the Meriton apartment!! (yippee) Next week it’ll be all change for us again! This move will be the last for a long while! It is pretty luxurious here but this living in a hotel isn’t like having a home! I cannot wait to get into our house! Although, when it’s my turn to change the bedsheets and clean the bathrooms maybe I’ll dream longingly about the time we have spent here!

We are definitely starting to feel more relaxed and at home in Oz! Its so nice to be recognising faces round here and getting to grips with where we are going when we trek out with the buggy in tow!

We have spent this week (drumroll please)……..looking for friends!!!!

I have decided the best time of day for this is 10am! The local park is rammed in the mornings, and Monty is particularly friendly!  If I leave it too late he is like a rabid beast and other kids start exiting the play area in their dozens! To be fair, both Poppy and Monty have been great with the children we have met! They are really enjoying playing with friends that they have got to know!

I decided there was nothing for it, I was going to the park on a friend finding mission! I donned my “I love Gin” t -shirt and voila! I have swapped numbers with three lovely ladies and even got some play dates arranged! I knew that would be a winner! I mean who in their right mind wouldn’t wanna be my friend!!? I even embraced one of the ladies after she gave me her number! She was so cool, (a yoga teacher) and beautiful, and was super friendly to boot! She seemed quite enthusiastic to swap numbers (go figure ?) and I was so overjoyed that I had scored a mate I bear hugged her, right there, by the slide!! Thankfully she wasn’t too terrified as she sent me a text later that evening! Wow I hadn’t realised how emotional it would be trying to make friends!!

I have had this little giggle creeping up on me every so often when I imagine what my girls back home would be saying if they could see me swooping in on the groovy mums at the park! Kicking Monty’s football into the circle of converse wearing, well groomed yummy mummy’s just so I can jog over and say hi!! Haha! One of these days, some new mum from the UK will be jogging in my direction thinking “wow I wanna be friends with her! I’m desperate afterall!!”

Lions and tigers and bears oh my!!

Today has been a real treat! We met up with some friends of friends, and had adults to talk to!!! Ok, this sounds nuts, but we have been on our own with no friends for waaaaaaay too long! Family time is lovely and all that, but the time has come when I just want to sit with a friend, have a coffee and talk about something other than whose turn it is to wipe Montys bottom (not that I ever get out of it!) or what a tragedy it is that Zane left One Direction (Poppy not Tim) ! Today was the day! We had about two hours in the Lego exhibition at The museum of Sydney, followed by a good hour of adult conversation while the four children played together! (http://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/museum-of-Sydney)

I think the children were just as relieved to have children to play with rather than us! I’m usually “too slow” or I always have to be “it”, which is so dull when the children never let me catch them!

We ended our day at circular quay, where we treated the children to fish and chips! The sun was setting and the view across the water of the Opera House was beautiful! Gosh we are so, so lucky to be here!

I did however spend a good ten minutes shooing away the seagulls with Poppy’s raincoat, while the “locals” watched on!! One lady even warned us how mean the birds were and that we really needed to be careful! Oh god I hate birds at the best of times! Pecky little things!!

Then suddenly Monty announced that he needed a wee, “NOWWWWW”! Ha, Tim drew the short straw! A mad dash to the public loos! So Poppy and I were left alone with two portions of yummy stodge and ketchup! Aaaaah peace and tranquility.

Until Poppy screeched “muuuuummmmmmy” and I turned round to find myself face to face with 50 seagulls and a bloody great big Ibis! These birds are vile! I think I pictured one in a previous post, but just in case…

They are grubby, and beaky, and witchy looking! It was looking at me, coming towards me, staring at me, as if to say “hand over the fish and chips or I’m gonna stab you in the face with my huge poisonous beak”! So I did what any sane foreigner would do, I grabbed the chips and Poppy (chips first) and ran! I honestly ran with all my might to the furthest bench! As we plonked down, there was no Ibis to be seen! Phew…..

There was however, a 300 year old Romanian accordion player sat next to us who had just started tuning up and a crowd was gathering around our bench! (How had I not noticed him?) I am sure people thought we were related to him and we were going to whip out our instruments! They soon realised we weren’t about to start jointing in with Romanian folk music, when the seagulls started dive bombing us in their hundreds and we had to make another quick exit! This time past Tim and Monty who were wondering where on earth we had gone, and to the safety of the train, and home to Green Square, where we know the local birdies aren’t viscous and there are definitely no accordion players!

There’s no place like home..

Two weeks into our Australian adventure and we have managed to have our application for a house approved! I didn’t realise what a huge relief this would be, and what a weight would be lifted from my shoulders! We have dragged the children through about 30 houses, some awesome, some pretty skanky! In fact, one of the houses yesterday, we walked into and it was a total mess! The builders had been in fixing the decking apparently! It looked like they had been in and trashed the joint. The agent turned the lights on, and yes it was grim! He then went upstairs, ran back down white as a ghost, and hurried us into the basement car park! We made our excuses and left. Both Lisa (relocation agent) and I were gutted to not have found out what was so frightening upstairs! We guessed it was a dead builder! We’ll never know!!!

House hunting here is so bizarre! You can arrange a private viewing of a property, but the agent generally thinks “well, if I’m there, I’ll make it an open house”, so they stick a board outside advertising an open viewing! This means there are 30 people elbowing each other out of the way into the bathroom ( usually with terrifying gold taps and Pepto-Bismol pink tiles) then shoving you out of the kitchen ( the most 70’s kitchen you have ever seen with mini net curtains to boot) all because “if you like it you need to sign NOW!!!!!” Apparently the rentals in Sydney run on 1% availability or something!! It was stressful to say the least. I found myself sweating, and shaking, running around the house shouting “Tim, I like it, I like it, get a form quiiiiiiick get a bloody form!!, Poppy get daddy, get a bloody form!”  Even if I didn’t really like it, I had to beat the other stressed out British family with screaming kids!!

Poor Monty gave up about 9 houses in! I was flaking a bit too! We started viewings at 10:00 and got home at 17:30!

Hey, it wasnt all bad! We got a McDonald’s take out coffee mid morning (mainly for a loo break), then a delicious Mexican box of delight for lunch, and even met this little fella in the last house we viewed…

Who cares how stressful the house hunting is, when you break for lunch at Cronella beach and the kids get to chase the cockatiels! Life is good!!

Here’s to our next adventure! Making our house a home, getting our darling girl into school, and meeting the locals!! Wish us luck!! I hope Sylvania is ready for The Wilson gang and all our enthusiasm to make this work! (I must get a t shirt with “Who wants to be my friend?” on the front!)

Safe to say, I think we are loving Australia!!

We must be over the rainbow!

I guess when you live in a city like Sydney, the shopping is going to be great! There are all kinds of delicious delights, shiny magpie enticing stores, and plenty of caffeine fuel stops!!

While we were child free at the weekend, Tim and I had a good wander and came across some awesome little places! One of which was Saint Honore cake shop. They sold all sorts of terrifying looking Asian cakes and rolls but we managed to hunt out these flaky, curry filled pies that were just too delicious to leave in the bag!

(I also loved that the owner was called Larry Leung! Sounded like the name of a body part in a kids first aid activity sheet).

We stumbled across Market City, which sold all kinds of tat! Fake handbags, ‘I love Australia’ t shirts of any colour, koala toys, fishnet stockings, sexy underwear, boomerangs! You name it, they had it! After I had dragged myself away from the sparkly leather hot pant stall, we turned the corner to find Paddys market, a huge fruit and veg market with a wonderful looking fish and meat market alongside!

They also had some awesome spice stalls, just like something out of a Middle Eastern souk! The smell was divine!

Shopping in the supermarket here isn’t as expensive as I thought, although I was amazed to see just how much cheaper and what seemed to be fresher the produce was here!

Mmmmm the dried fruit and nut stalls were so reasonable! They sold Honey and seed bars which were far too delicious to be good for you!

After we had munched our way to the exit we headed for Westfield shopping centre which is the main mall they have here! They seem to have them all over the place! Like any shopping mall there are all kinds of shops ranging from stationary to high end designer clothes and jewellery! A mall is a mall where ever you are! I didn’t recognise too many of the brands but there were the usual suspects! Pandora, Vodafone etc. We got the elevator up to level 4 and grabbed some lunch (obviously). Being the adventurous type we went for Sababba again (Sababba.com.au) as we love those middle Eastern flavours and the falafel are amazing! Cooked to order so piping hot!

While walking back to the harbour we stumbled across  this beauty! And I mean beauty! The floor was tiled with those beautiful terracotta Victorian tiles, and all the shop windows promised delight inside!

There were hats, cosmetics, spices, a wonderful chocolatier!

This was more like it! I must be able to find something to buy in here!

Ah, yes here we go!

I thought this shop was selling Grown Alchemist products (http://www.grownalchemist.com), but no! This was Aesop! Almost as awesome but not organic! They sell beauty products in delightfully simple packaging, row after row of brown glass bottles with sweet smelling potions. Check them out at Aesop.com their website is stylish and makes me want to shop.

Managed to find a super stocking filler too!

All this shopping was a great excuse to head to Circular Quay and have a well deserved glass of prosecco in the sunshine at Opera Bar! (Operabar.com.au) If you ever find yourself in Sydney and fancy a glass of something, this is the place to come! It’s stylish, the bistro style food looks delish and the scenery is breathtaking (I don’t think anyone could get bored of the view).

Time to jump on the ferry and meet the kids! Back to reality after a grown up day! Lush!
